Richard Newton - MD

Richard Newton – Director

Richard has been in the Motor trade all of his working life. He served his Apprenticeship at Morris Motors in Cowley, and then spent a year at the BMC Competitions Department at Abingdon helping to prepare the Works race and rally cars. Moving on to Downton Engineering near Salisbury he became Sales Manager to Bunty and Daniel Richmond. He then moved to Germany to manage the Wooding Hamburg Racing Team who ran Mini Coopers and then Ford Escort BDA’s in the European Championship. On returning to England in the mid 70’s, he spent several years with Serck Services, the Radiator people, before he and Vera set up Newton Commercial from the kitchen table at their home in Ipswich. Richard is still heavily involved in the business and although on a sunny day he drives to the golf course rather than work, Richard's experience and knowledge in the British trimming world is second to none.

Vera Newton

Vera Newton – Director

Vera was working as a nurse at Ipswich hospital when Newton Commercial was started and while working and bringing up 2 young children, she and Richard repaired commercial lorry seats on the kitchen table at night. This started the business rolling and before long they would specialize in trim for British classics cars. A move from Ipswich to the Suffolk coast in 1979 allowed Vera and Richard to concentrate on the business full time and Vera became a self-taught business women and ran the day to day operations until only a few years ago. With her astute business acumen, Vera became one of the most successful female business leaders in this male dominated industry in the UK. Vera is now pretty much retired and spends her days on the golf course and looking after her Grandchildren but still mentors Jonny and still drives her Morris Minor Convertible.

Jonny Newton - MD

Jonny Newton – Managing Director

As a teenager Jonny worked through his school and university holidays at Newton Commercial on the factory floor. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in Politics in 1995 and then spent 3 years working in London for the Mirror Group within their marketing department. He then spent 2 years overseas as an open water diving instructor in Australia and Thailand before returning to London to work for Witan Jardine, a financial services firm in the city. After spending 4 years setting up a financial management division, Jonny returned to Suffolk to learn the family business. Jonny now runs the day-to-day activities of the business, overseeing the Sales, Marketing, Finance and Factory floor production. Jonny is instrumental in developing new markets, bringing new revenue streams to the business and moving the company forward.

Jonny and Katie Newton have 3 children and enjoy taking them camping in their own Brazilian Import Van. Jonny is also a keen Golfer and enjoys the odd game of football or squash as well as cycling to and from work each day.

John White - Technical director

John White – Technical Director

John started his automotive career working for Dunlop and worked his way up to become their area Sales Manager. He met Richard and Vera whilst selling them foams from Dunlopillo and then joined them at Newton Commercial after working for Jackson Components Ltd selling hardboard and fiberboard parts for the automotive and furniture industries. John has been with the business for over 25 years and is an outright expert in classic car interior trim. John has worked in every job in every department and now heads up our R&D team. As technical director he resolves technical issues both from customers and on the factory floor. He oversees the manufacturing, tooling and pattern work processes in the factory and ensures our skilled work force have the correct manufacturing instructions.

John is a keen Badminton player and coach. He coaches the Suffolk under 15’s County squad. Other interests include archery and ballroom dancing.


Karen Williams - Sewing Department

Karen Williams – Head of Sewing

Karen joined Newton Commercial in 2002, starting her career as a sewing machinist. She has worked her way up to become head of the Sewing Department in 2012. Karen oversees the work of our 16 skilled sewing machinists. She ensures the gaiters, tonneau covers, seat covers, headlinings and door pulls are made to the highest possible quality.

Outside of the factory Karen is involved in local amateur dramatics for a company called Bright Sparks and can often be found on Stage in productions such as the Wizard of Oz. Karen not only acts but also makes her own costumes and helps in the wardrobe department. Karen also sings in a local choir and enjoys swimming, walking her 3 dogs and looking after her husband and 2 daughters.

Duncan Goodwin - Operation managersDuncan Goodwin – Operations Manager

Duncan has been with the business nearly 25 years and oversees production in all areas of our manufacturing processes. Having initially helped out on a part time basis, Duncan has worked his way up to become Operations Manager and has been the main influence in creating our awesome VW range of products. He is always looking for new opportunities to further strengthen the company and is more than happy to discuss any such suggestions that may be of interest, he also likes to keep tabs on the V Dub scene to monitor market demand and ensure our products are promoted as much as possible. Proud father and step father, Duncan enjoys weekends out of the county and on occasions is happy to embrace the "work hard, play hard culture" !

Duncan's main passion is Horse Racing and he enjoys frequent visits to Racecourses around the country. He is also a self-confessed financial expert and always has one eye on the stock market( no sign of a million yet though). Watching his son Luke playing football on Saturday afternoons is also putting a big smile on his face, despite clashing with the racing on Channel 4 !! Gary Butler - stores/purchasing manager

Gary Butler – Stores, Dispatch and Purchasing Manager

Gary has also been with Newton Commercial for nearly 25 years. Gary started his working career as a pick up and delivery driver for the MOD at Bentwaters Air Force base. He then worked as a photographic processor for Kodak. These days Gary runs our ever expanding dispatch area which sends out your Newton Commercial trim. He is also in charge of buying and his time is spent overseeing the 5,000 Sq. Ft stores department and buying in raw materials to feed the factory. Gary will deal with trade customer queries regarding all their shipping needs and will make sure that your Newton Commercial parcel arrives safe and sound.

Outside of factory hours Gary is probably the busiest man we know. He is interested in all sports from cricket and pool to football and cycling, as well as joining Richard, Duncan and Jonny in the odd game of golf. Gary is also in charge of the local Youth Club where he works 2 evenings a week providing informal education in the form of cooking, games and discussions to help children mature into responsible teenagers and keep them off the streets.




Shaun Henderson - Sales

Shaun Henderson – Sales Manager

Shaun has worked his way up the ranks of the company. He started work in the stores for his Father in Law Gary in 2006 and has worked his way through most of the other departments in the factory too. Shaun’s knowledge of our parts and the production processes is impressive. Shaun now runs the day to day operations in the office with help from the team. He also maintains our website, scoial media and computer systems. Shaun loves to hear from customers on Facebook and Twitter so please feel free to Tweet, Re-Tweet, Like or Share your interior news and make his day.

You will find Shaun at the shows we attend or driving his own Classic Mini. Shaun is a keen football fan and plays 5 a side football to keep fit.

Josh butler Newton Commercial

Josh Butler – Sales Adviser

Josh recently joined the office team in 2015 after playing a major part in the day to day stores operation. Josh has worked at Newton Commercial since 2010 and has an all round excellent knowledge on both our products and our service. Now Josh is a key contact for trade and retail sales and will be more than happy to fulfill any enquiries. 

Josh is a big Ipswich Town fan (COYB)!

Many people dont know but Josh has many of his family members working at Newton Commercial. These include Gary (Dad) and Shaun (brother in-law)!

The "Butlers" see themselves as the second family of Newton Commercial.


Lisa Moffatt - sales

Lisa Moffat – Sales Adviser

Lisa worked for Fred Olsen Cruise lines in Ipswich for 6 years in the sales and accounts departments, before joining the team here in 2007. After dealing with your typical cruise passenger customer, working at Newton Commercial seems a blast. Lisa works in the office dealing with various projects, taking your orders and enquiries and maintains our trade price lists. Lisa currently works part time juggling life here in our busy office with looking after her little boy, Lewis, who also makes work here seem like child’s play! Lisa also enjoys badminton, spending time her family and the odd glass of red wine.

Lorraine Warne - Accounts

Lorraine Warne – Accounts

Lorraine runs the accounts at Newton Commercial. She worked for Norwich Union for over 10 years in their accounts team and has run the accounts department here for over 13 years. Lorraine works 3 or 4 days part-time since having her children and you can catch her on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Mornings or all day on a Wednesday. Call her for any accounts queries, she will be pleased to help.

Lorraine is a keen Norwich City fan and quite often dons the yellow and green scarf to support the team when playing at home. Lorraine also loves days out with her children Harrison and Chloe and enjoys a night out at the ‘dogs’ at Great Yarmouth Stadium.

Cooper comes in every day with Jonny and even has his own kennel and run at the back of the main factory. More than likely he will be in the office or near anyone who has given him a biscuit that week.
